Perhaps one of British Columbia’s best kept secrets is the incredible wine we have. Why is it a secret? Due to BC’s liquor regulations, very little of the local wine actually leaves the province.

Possibly BC’s most recognizable wine is icewine.  Grape varieties from merlot to chardonnay remain on their vines well into fall and winter where they then freeze. Once the temperature of the vineyard reaches -10 degrees Celsius and the grapes have had several hours to freeze, they are then pressed. This process delivers a uniquely concentrated flavor and an excellent dessert wine.

BC is more than dessert wine country though. With the many climates throughout the province, there is also an abundance of local wine to be found in the Okanagan. Undoubtedly the heart of BC’s wine county, the Okanagan Valley produces a variety of extraordinary chardonnays and merlots in the south while the slightly cooler northern areas produce pinot blanc and Riesling.
